Among the Trees

Shafston Avenue, Kangaroo Point

Interior Section A-A 1:100

Psychometric Analysis

“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” This project aims to create a space that emphasises the quiet ambiance despite the expectation of a loud main road. Shafston Avenue is a major road, incorporating an entrance to the Clem 7 tunnel, so by all means, it should be noisy and unsettling. Among the Trees, however, the light between the leaves and the softness of the trunks contrasted with the bitumen road and concrete footpath leaves you in awe. This experience of light and sound is emphasised in the Kangaroo Point Museum of the Moving Image Project (Among the Trees).

The proposed design’s prominent feature of a timber mullion “cage” acts as its own light show exhibit in the request to design a museum based on film. Wanting to convey a forest experience above a major road, I incorporated treehouse design elements while maintaining the necessary acoustic features needed in a museum of film.
