Living with Lupus: Resilience in Business

Lupus is an autoimmune condition that can affect any organ. I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which means it can impact all my organs at any time. Although I’ve been in remission for some time thanks to my treatment, lupus still affects my daily life. Joint and muscle pain can make it difficult to get out of bed some days, and fatigue is a constant companion, especially during the summer or after sun exposure.

Despite these challenges, lupus has taught me resilience, a quality that has profoundly shaped my approach to business. Just as I’ve had to learn to navigate the unpredictability of my health, I’ve applied these lessons to managing the uncertainties of entrepreneurship.

1. Embracing Uncertainty

Living with lupus means accepting that no two days are the same. One day I might feel energetic and productive; the next, I’m confined to bed. Similarly, business is full of uncertainties: client demands, market shifts, and unforeseen setbacks.

To cope, I’ve learned to plan flexibly. I used to cling to rigid schedules, but through therapy, I’ve embraced adaptability. Now, I account for the possibility of needing breaks or days off, ensuring I can still meet my goals without compromising my health.

2. Leveraging Support Systems

Resilience doesn’t mean going it alone. My journey with lupus has underscored the importance of a strong support network. From family and friends to my medical team, I’ve learned that leaning on others is not a weakness but a sign of strength.

The same principle applies in business. Mentors, collaborators, and my team play a crucial role in helping me navigate challenges and grow. Asking for help has enabled me to thrive, both personally and professionally.

3. Finding Strength in Vulnerability

Opening up about my lupus journey has been a transformative experience. It’s allowed me to connect deeply with others, including my clients. By sharing my struggles, I’ve built trust and authenticity, creating relationships that go beyond surface-level interactions.

In business, being vulnerable has helped me stand out. Clients appreciate honesty and transparency, which fosters a sense of partnership and mutual understanding.

4. Resilience Through Adaptation

Flexibility is essential for managing both lupus and a business. I’ve had to adapt my work style to accommodate my health, finding ways to stay productive without overexerting myself.

Similarly, businesses must adapt to changing circumstances to survive. Whether it’s pivoting strategies, embracing new technologies, or responding to client feedback, resilience through adaptation is key to long-term success.

5. Focusing on Long-Term Goals

Chronic illness teaches you to balance short-term setbacks with a long-term perspective. I’ve learned to focus on the bigger picture, even when daily challenges feel overwhelming.

In business, this mindset helps me stay aligned with my vision. Whether facing a tough quarter or a challenging project, I remind myself that every step, no matter how small, contributes to long-term growth.

6. Celebrating Small Wins

Living with lupus has taught me to find joy in small victories. On days when getting out of bed feels like an accomplishment, I celebrate that win.

This lesson carries over to business. A positive client review, completing a project on time, or hitting a minor milestone—all are worth celebrating. These moments of recognition fuel motivation and remind me of the progress I’m making.

Living with lupus has been one of my greatest challenges, but it’s also been a source of immense strength. It has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the value of connection, all of which have shaped my approach to business. We all face challenges in life and work. By embracing them, we can transform adversity into a source of strength.
