How to Enhance

Creativity

Creativity is a powerful and transformative force that fuels innovation, problem-solving, and personal growth. Whether you’re an artist, writer, entrepreneur, or simply looking to tap into your creative side, enhancing your creativity can lead to tremendous fulfilment and success.

As someone who works and plays in creative fields, I understand the unique challenges and blessings of having a mind brimming with ideas. I often find myself overflowing with creativity, with countless ideas and concepts swirling around. Still, I’ve learned that following through and bringing those ideas to life can be a hurdle. How do we as creatives enhance this skill – especially as someone with a neurodivergent brain.

Embrace Curiosity

Cultivating a sense of curiosity is an invaluable tool for enhancing creativity. Personally, I have found being an intrinsically curious person helps anchor me and allows me to navigate the vast expanse of my imagination. It helps to fuel my desire to explore and discover, and ultimately propels me forward in my creative endeavours.

Curiosity enables us to look beyond the surface and delve deeper into the world around us. It encourages us to question, challenge, and seek alternative perspectives. By approaching life with a curious mindset, we become open to new possibilities.

In my experience, curiosity has allowed me to find inspiration in the smallest details of everyday life. Sometimes in the seemingly mundane, I stumble upon unexpected connections and ideas. Curiosity also fuels the process of connecting seemingly unrelated concepts. It encourages us to explore diverse fields of knowledge and draw inspiration from various sources. By being curious, I have bridged gaps between different disciplines, merging ideas from art, science, philosophy and more. This interdisciplinary approach has enriched my creative process and enabled me to think beyond traditional boundaries.

Moreso, curiosity allows us to embrace the joy of learning – a major passion of mine. It nurtures a lifelong thirst for knowledge and a desire to continually expand our understanding. By approaching new experiences with curiosity, we become active participants in our own growth and development.

Engage in Brainstorming and Idea Generation

Neurodivergent individuals often possess a natural inclination towards divergent thinking. This way of thinking means that their minds are highly adept at generating multitudes of ideas, often in unconventional and original ways. The challenges arise, typically, when it comes to organising and prioritising those ideas. I am very familiar with this as the amount of lists I have even for this website alone breaks my organisational apps as the sheer volume can be overwhelming for me to put into play.

Regularly setting aside time for brainstorming sessions has been a game-changer for me this year in managing and harnessing my creative ideas. During these dedicated sessions, I create a safe space to let my imagination run wild and capture all the ideas that flow through my mind. I usually use a simple note-taking technique to document my ideas however other techniques such as mind mapping and journaling could also be useful.

I create a tangible representation of my thoughts by recording my ideas during brainstorming sessions. This helps me retain and revisit those ideas later and provides a way to visually see the connections and patterns that may emerge between them. Furthermore, organising and categorising the ideas gathered can be valuable in the creative process. By creating a system or structure based on themes, relevance, or potential, I can begin to make sense of the chaotic jumble of thoughts. This process helps me identify the ideas that align most closely with my goals, interests, or current projects.

Surround Yourself with Diverse Perspectives

Individuals with diverse perspectives to your own bring a fresh and unique outlook on the world. Embracing this diversity is essential for expanding our creative horizons. Engaging with people from different backgrounds and disciplines enriches our understanding and ultimately enhances our creative process.

Interacting with individuals with varied backgrounds has been transformative for me personally. I truly believe it has broadened my creative outlook and deepened my understanding of the multifaceted nature of creativity. Through conversations and collaborations, I have gained exposure to a range of approaches, ideas, and problem-solving methods that I may not have considered on my own.

Welcoming diverse perspectives encourages us to question our assumptions and expand our thinking beyond our comfort zones. It challenges us to explore unfamiliar ideas, leading to personal growth and intellectual development. By actively seeking out different viewpoints, we gain a broader understanding of the complexities that exist within the world and become more open-minded and receptive to alternative ways of approaching creative challenges.

Embrace Failure and Learn from Mistakes

Failure is not something to be feared but rather an integral component of the creative process. Through failure, we gain valuable insights, learn important lessons, and grow both personally and creatively.

By reframing failure, we recognise that every setback carries valuable lessons and provides opportunities for growth. When a project doesn’t go as planned or an idea doesn’t materialise as expected, we can reflect on the experience, identify what didn’t work and use that knowledge to refine out approach in the future. Each failure becomes a stepping stone that propels us forward, allowing us to iterate, adapt, and improve our creative work.

I have definitely grappled with the fear of failure throughout my creative journey. Failure often holds me back… or I should say the fear of failure… from fully exploring my creative potential. Embracing failure within recent years has also fostered the mindset of curiosity and experimentation within me. I have become more open to taking risks and exploring uncharted territories. I have discovered that some of my most innovative ideas have emerged from moments of unexpected setbacks from what the original plan was.

Engage in Creative Exercises

Engaging in creative exercises has been a transformative practice in my own creative journey. These exercises have served as a playground for my mind, allowing me to explore new ideas, push my creative boundaries, and tap into the depths of my imagination.

Doodling and sketching have always been cherished forms of creative expression for me. when I pick up a pen and let my hand flow freely across the page, I enter a state of creative flow. The act of doodling not only allows me to capture fleeting ideas but also serves as a meditative practice.

Creative writing prompts have also been instrumental in expanding my storytelling abilities. Through engaging with journaling and creative writing prompts, I have been challenged to think on my feet, explore different perspectives, and craft narratives that resonate with readers. These exercises have pushed me to experiment with different genres, styles, and voices.

Seek Inspiration from Different Art Forms

Seeking inspiration from different art forms has been a deeply enriching and personal experience for me. as a creative individual, I have always been drawn to various forms of artistic expression, whether it be music, visual arts, literature, and even dance (maybe not professionally though). Exploring these diverse art forms has not only broadened my creative horizons but has also provided a fountain of inspiration that continuously fuels my own creative endeavours.

One of the art forms that has profoundly impacted my creative journey is music. The melodies, rhythms, and lyrics have the power to evoke emotions, ignite my imagination, and transport me to completely different worlds. Regardless of what I choose to listen to, each genre and lyrical composition offers a unique perspective and artistic language that inspires me to think differently and approach my own creative projects with renewed energy.

By seeking inspiration from different art forms, I have embraced a multidisciplinary approach to my own creativeness. The fusion of ideas, techniques, and aesthetics has allowed me to infuse my work with a richness and depth that I honestly don’t believe I would have achieved otherwise. It has encouraged me to think beyond the confines of a single medium and to explore new creative possibilities.
